01
Radio capability and difficult positions
A meter's modem must support the technologies and service available in the intended region. Low-power cellular options such as LTE-M or NB-IoT can be considered where supported, but should not be assumed interchangeable or universally available. Test the actual cabinet, enclosure or mounting point, including any antenna constraints.
02
Power and message scheduling
Battery behaviour depends on the hardware, radio conditions and the communication pattern. Reporting intervals, reconnect attempts and receive requirements can change demand. Sleep and wake functions need to be supported by the device and service, with the complete operating pattern measured rather than an assumed lifetime attached to the SIM.
03
Reading history and application integrity
Decide whether the meter or gateway buffers information, how readings are identified and how the application handles repeats or late arrivals. Missing data should be distinguishable from a genuine zero reading. Monitoring a SIM's registration is useful, but it does not confirm the application has received a valid meter reading.
