M2M & industrial IoT, explained

Turn machine information into a useful business view.

Industrial IoT connects suitable equipment and sensors to applications that collect, display and use their information. A project might concern equipment status, environmental readings or a maintenance workflow. The first task is to identify the information needed and the boundary between business reporting and the specialist systems that operate the machinery.

Radian can help coordinate connectivity for a defined industrial-data project across offices, sites and remote equipment. The design brings together the device interface, local gateway, mobile service and receiving application. It should explain how information is handled when a connection is unavailable, while leaving operational-control and safety functions with their responsible specialists.

What it can do for your organisation

Practical benefits.
A clearer business fit.

01

Information from distributed equipment

A connected application can give authorised teams a more consistent view of readings from different locations. Useful records include timestamps, device identity and the state of the reporting connection, helping distinguish a genuine equipment reading from a unit that has stopped communicating.

02

More focused maintenance decisions

Historical readings and exception reports can help specialists decide where to investigate. A threshold alert and a predictive model are different tools, with different validation needs. The project should define the evidence needed and the action a person or application takes when a condition is identified.

03

A repeatable route to expansion

Start with representative equipment and establish a supported installation and data format. Consistent asset mappings, connection records and ownership make additional deployments easier to organise. They also help identify whether an issue lies with the sensor, local interface, network or application.

Make an informed choice

The options and details
worth understanding.

01

From equipment interface to application

A gateway may collect information through a supported local interface and pass it to an application over an IP connection. Confirm the protocols, data format and access permitted by the equipment supplier. Read-only reporting and remote control have different requirements and should not be combined without a separately agreed design.

02

Current state, events and offline periods

An application may retain the last known device state even when the equipment is offline. That is useful context, but it is not a fresh measurement. Define timestamps, message acknowledgement and any local buffering so teams understand what has been received, what is delayed and what is still unknown.

03

Network boundaries and administration

Review how industrial equipment is separated from business and public networks. A private mobile route or outbound management connection may support the design, alongside authentication and limited access. Configuration changes, firmware updates and remote actions need a defined owner and appropriate approval within the operating environment.

Put the choices in context

Define the industrial-data task clearly

How this can fit your world

From a service description
to a practical requirement.

Illustrative scenario

A business gathering machine-status information

A pilot can connect a small set of approved gateways to the receiving platform. The team can check data formats, timestamps and behaviour during disconnection before repeating the arrangement. The outcome is a clearer reporting route, not a claim that the mobile service controls the production process.

Illustrative scenario

Remote environmental monitoring

Suitable sensors at distributed sites can send readings to a central application. The project should review the sensor and power arrangement, local connectivity and the handling of delayed data. Any intervention based on a reading remains part of the separately defined operational workflow.

From planning to everyday use

Delivery with the details
thought through.

  1. 01

    Set the reporting purpose

Identify equipment, information and intended users. Define the boundary around any operational-control or safety-related system.

  2. 02

    Review the integration

Confirm supported interfaces, gateway functions and the receiving application. Establish network separation, authentication and ownership.

  3. 03

    Pilot meaningful conditions

Test normal messages, exceptions and loss of connectivity. Check how the application represents old state and later-arriving readings.

  4. 04

    Operate and improve

Maintain mappings, configuration and support records. Review changes and the usefulness of reports with the responsible equipment and application specialists.

Your proposal confirms the available features, supported platforms and delivery responsibilities. Product availability and individual service commitments depend on the selected agreement.

IoT use cases overview →
Can you connect existing machinery?

That depends on the interfaces, supplier support and access permitted for the equipment. We can review a defined data requirement with the relevant specialists before selecting a gateway and connectivity approach.

Can the application still show a device while it is offline?

Some applications retain a last known state or history. The display should make its age clear. Retained information does not mean the device is currently connected or that an action has reached it.

Can IoT information support maintenance planning?

Yes, useful readings and trends can support a specialist maintenance process. The project needs appropriate sensors, data quality and interpretation; a connection alone does not establish a predictive-maintenance capability.

Is a private mobile connection the same as a complete security design?

No. It addresses part of the communication path. Equipment access, application permissions, local network boundaries and change ownership still need to be established.

Can remote control be included?

It requires its own separately assessed scope with the equipment and operational specialists. The design must distinguish ordinary reporting from actions that can affect machinery or the wider process.

UK-wide service enquiries

M2M & industrial IoT across the UK.

Start with the machines, environments and data paths at each UK site. Industrial installations may require suitable enclosures, antennas, access controls and fallback arrangements, with responsibilities agreed for both the network and operational equipment.

Based in Charlwood, we welcome enquiries nationwide, with a particular focus on Horley, Crawley, Gatwick, Surrey, Sussex and London. Delivery, availability and any site attendance are confirmed for your chosen service.
